Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant - up to $10,000 per trainee

Alberta reimburses employers for third-party training that builds productivity skills. The employer pays 50 per cent of eligible training costs and government pays the other 50 per cent, to a maximum of $5,000 per employed trainee per fiscal year. Hiring and training an unemployed Albertan raises that to 75 per cent and $10,000. An employer can claim up to $100,000 per fiscal year.

The catch: You must apply before the training starts - there is no retroactive claim, and this is the single most common way employers lose the money. Training has to be productivity-focused (business process and operations, technical, or digital and technological) and finish within 52 weeks. Basic skills, soft skills and interpersonal training are excluded, as are apprenticeship technical training and self-study. You pay up front and are reimbursed afterwards.

  • Private sector employers, including incorporated and unincorporated businesses and partnerships, non-profits, First Nations and Metis Settlements. must meet
