Georgia Department of Revenue

The games and interactive media version of the film credit, administered by the Department of Revenue: a Georgia business location, $250,000 of Georgia payroll, gross income under $100 million and at least $250,000 of qualified production spending.

The catch: This one has a hard ceiling that the film credit does not: $12.5 million across every claimant in the state per taxable year, and $1.5 million per company. A state-wide cap on a credit means the answer can be no for reasons that have nothing to do with your production. Certification runs the opposite way round from film - Revenue certifies first, then the company applies to the Department of Economic Development for project certification.

Prairies Economic Development Canada

Federal response to tariff and trade disruption, delivered on the Prairies by PrairiesCan. Projects typically range from $500,000 to $5 million, and part of the money genuinely is non-repayable.

The catch: Read the repayment line before treating the headline as free money. Up to $1 million can be non-repayable for an eligible business, "otherwise funding to for-profit businesses is normally repayable", repaid with no interest over 5 years in monthly installments starting 1 year after the project end date, and normally covering up to 50 per cent of eligible costs. Not-for-profits are normally non-repayable up to 90 per cent, but their revenue-generating projects flip to repayable - so the line runs through project type as well as applicant type.

Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education

Alaska's merit-based scholarship for students who complete a specified rigorous high school curriculum and meet a GPA or standardised test threshold. Verbatim: "awarding eligible students up to $28,000 total towards their postsecondary education."

The catch: The qualifying work happens in high school and cannot be made up afterwards - the curriculum requirement is the real gate, and a student who did not take the required courses cannot become eligible later by improving their grades. The $28,000 is a total across years at a per-year rate that depends on award level, not a single payment.

Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education

A $15,000 scholarship from the University of Alaska for students in the top ten percent of their Alaska high school class, usable at any of the three UA universities.

The catch: You do not apply for the award itself - it is conferred on class rank, and what you have to do is claim it by applying for admission before the deadline. The programme's own page states a preferred deadline of 30 June 2026 for the class of 2026 and offers an admission fee waiver by code. Award letters go to the school, so a student who changed schools or never received the letter can be eligible and unaware.

Canada Revenue Agency

Rebate of up to $50,000 of federal GST for eligible first-time buyers of a newly built or substantially renovated primary residence. Full below $1 million, phased out between $1 million and $1.5 million, gone at $1.5 million.

The catch: Timing rules attach to when the purchase agreement was signed and when the home completes, so this has to be checked BEFORE signing rather than at tax time. The phase-out band is steep.

Georgia Department of Labor

The federal credit for hiring from targeted groups - veterans, people leaving TANF or SNAP, people recently released from prison, vocational rehabilitation referrals, summer youth, the long-term unemployed - worth between $1,200 and $9,600 per employee depending on the group and hours worked. There is no limit on the number of qualifying hires. The Georgia Department of Labor is the state agency that certifies eligibility.

The catch: The credit's legal authority expired on 31 December 2025 and Georgia is explicit about what that means: it will accept, date-stamp, log and retain certification requests for hires starting on or after 1 January 2026, and it "will not release certification request determinations" until Congress reauthorises. So the correct move for an employer is counter-intuitive - file anyway, within the 28 calendar days of the start date that the rules still require, and expect no answer - because a late filing cannot be rescued if reauthorisation turns out to be retroactive. The employee must also work at least 120 hours in the first year, and rehires and relatives never qualify.

Canada Revenue Agency

Tax-free monthly payment to a maximum of $8,157 per child under six and $6,883 per child aged six through 17 for the July 2026-June 2027 year. Reduced as adjusted family net income rises.

The catch: The child has to be registered and BOTH partners have to keep their returns current - a single unfiled return from a spouse stops the payment for the whole household.

Georgia Department of Labor

A no-cost fidelity bond covering an employer against theft, forgery, larceny and embezzlement for the first six months of employing someone whose background makes them hard to place: people with convictions, people in recovery, people with poor credit or a bankruptcy, people leaving public assistance, young people with no work history. The Georgia Department of Labor issues it as the certified local agency.

The catch: The thing to know is how little there is to do: no application from the job seeker, no paperwork burden on the employer, no deductible if the employer files a claim, and the bond self-terminates after six months with nothing to cancel. It is cover, not cash, and it only exists for the first six months - after that the employee is an ordinary employee. It runs through Georgia Department of Labor career centres rather than online.

Employment and Social Development Canada

20% on the first $2,500 contributed to an RESP each year, or $500; up to $600 a year for lower- and middle-income families. Lifetime maximum $7,200 per child, and unused entitlement can be caught up in later years.

The catch: Matched money. Unlike the Canada Learning Bond it pays nothing without your own contribution, which is why the two get confused and why a family with no spare cash should claim the bond first.

Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education

Need-based aid for Alaska students at qualifying in-state postsecondary institutions. Verbatim: "AEG awards range from $500 to $4,000 per academic year."

The catch: It is not first-come in the usual sense but it is prioritised, and the priority order is published: prior-year recipients first, then date of FAFSA submission, then enrolment level. Filing the FAFSA late is therefore not a neutral act - it moves you down a queue for a limited pot. The FAFSA is mandatory, it must be redone every year, and the grant only follows you to a qualifying institution in Alaska.

Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services

The Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services takes complaints about mobile, home phone, internet and TV service that the provider has failed to resolve. It is free to consumers and small businesses, and it can order a corrected bill, a refund, a credit, a service remedy or compensation.

The catch: You have to try the provider first and be able to show you did - the date, who you spoke to, the ticket number and what you asked for. The commissioner can award up to $5,000, but that is the ceiling of the decision-maker's authority and not a typical result; most outcomes are a corrected bill or a credit. The complaint must also fall inside the CCTS mandate, which covers billing, contracts, credit management, service delivery and cancellation, and not the price of a plan you agreed to.

Alberta Student Aid

Alberta high school achievement scholarship, awarded on five-course averages in grades 10, 11 and 12: $300/$400 for grade 10, $500/$800 for grade 11, $700/$1,300 for grade 12 at the 75–79.9% and 80%+ tiers. Maximum $2,500.

The catch: Marks alone do not qualify you - you also have to be enrolled in a full course load in a designated post-secondary or apprenticeship program of at least one semester. It can only be received once in a lifetime.

Employment and Social Development Canada

$500 for the first eligible year and $100 for each following year to age 15, up to $2,000, paid into an RESP. No contribution of your own is required at any point. You can still claim the whole accumulated amount up to the day before the beneficiary turns 21.

The catch: The money goes into an RESP and can only be spent on post-secondary education - it is not cash you can use this month. The child must have been born after 2003.

Government of Alberta

A two-year pilot begun in mid-2025 giving small and medium manufacturers up to $30,000 in matching funding, plus advice and expertise, for technology upgrades and new machinery. Over $4 million is available and roughly 130 businesses are expected to be supported. Eligible costs include capital equipment, materials, training and installation, professional fees and direct labour on the project.

The catch: It is matching funding: the grant covers a maximum of 50 per cent of eligible costs, so $30,000 of grant needs $30,000 of your own money. You must have a physical Alberta location that makes, refines, refurbishes or processes a product, employ between 5 and 750 people, and have been incorporated continuously for two years or more. The equipment has to be used in Alberta. Applications go through Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, not through Alberta.ca.

Alberta Emergency Management Agency

When a mandatory evacuation order runs 7 days or more, Alberta pays $1,250 per adult and $500 per dependent under 18, by e-transfer, usually within 24 hours of applying. There is a standing terms page year-round and a separate portal that opens when an event is declared.

The catch: You must have actually left under a mandatory order - staying in your community during one disqualifies you. You have 60 days from the start of the order. You can apply without a verified Alberta.ca Account, but the e-transfer will not arrive until you have started verification.

Employment and Social Development Canada

Matches RDSP contributions at rates up to 300%, to as much as $3,500 in a year. Unused grant entitlement from up to ten previous eligible years can be carried forward and caught up.

The catch: This is matched money, not free money - the top rate only applies to the first slice of contribution, so the $3,500 needs your own deposit behind it. Payable only to the end of the year the beneficiary turns 49, same as the bond.

Alaska Department of Revenue, Permanent Fund Dividend Division

An annual cash payment to Alaska residents from the state's resource royalty fund. It is not income-tested and not needs-based: residency and a filed application are the whole test, which makes it the broadest single cash entitlement in this catalog.

The catch: The amount for the current year is not announced when the application window opens, so you apply without knowing what you are applying for - the page carried only the 2025 figure when it was read. The application window is fixed and short, and missing it forfeits the year entirely: there is no late filing and no retroactive claim. Residency rules are stricter than they look, and time spent outside Alaska has to be accounted for.

Government of Alberta

Alberta reimburses employers for third-party training that builds productivity skills. The employer pays 50 per cent of eligible training costs and government pays the other 50 per cent, to a maximum of $5,000 per employed trainee per fiscal year. Hiring and training an unemployed Albertan raises that to 75 per cent and $10,000. An employer can claim up to $100,000 per fiscal year.

The catch: You must apply before the training starts - there is no retroactive claim, and this is the single most common way employers lose the money. Training has to be productivity-focused (business process and operations, technical, or digital and technological) and finish within 52 weeks. Basic skills, soft skills and interpersonal training are excluded, as are apprenticeship technical training and self-study. You pay up front and are reimbursed afterwards.

Employment and Social Development Canada

Income-tested monthly payment for DTC-approved people aged 18 to 64, to a maximum of $204.20 a month for July 2026-June 2027. Back payments can cover up to 24 months from the application date. A $150 supplemental payment toward the cost of DTC medical certification is reported to start September 2026.

The catch: Back pay stops at June 2025 no matter how far back the disability goes. You must have filed, and so must your spouse or partner where you have one - their unfiled return blocks your payment.

Canadian Transportation Agency

When a flight is delayed or cancelled for a reason within the airline's control and not required for safety, and you arrive at your destination three or more hours late, the airline owes you a fixed cash amount under the Air Passenger Protection Regulations. A large airline pays $400 for a delay of three to six hours, $700 for six to nine, and $1,000 beyond nine. Small airlines pay $125, $250 and $500 on the same bands.

The catch: Most disruptions do not qualify, and the airline decides the category. Weather, a safety defect and air traffic control are all outside the airline's control and pay nothing under this rule - a separate set of rebooking and refund obligations applies instead. The claim is not automatic and the airline will not volunteer it: you must claim in writing within one year of the disruption, after which the airline has 30 days to pay or to tell you why it thinks nothing is owed. Compensation may be offered as a voucher only if you are told the cash value and the voucher is worth more, and you may refuse it.
