Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program (this is a loan)
Alberta Seniors, Community and Social Services
Marketed as letting a senior homeowner "voluntarily defer all or part of their residential property taxes." It is in this catalog as an anti-entry, so that the next research pass stops rediscovering it as free money: verbatim from the same page, "This is done through a low-interest home equity loan with the Government of Alberta."
The catch: It is debt secured against your house. Verbatim: "The current interest rate is 4.45%. It is reviewed, and may be adjusted, every 6 months in April and October"; the program "will register a caveat against your land title certificate to secure the loan you receive"; and you must "have a minimum of 25% equity in your home to allow the government to secure the loan." The word deferral does not trip the loan reflex the way the word loan does, which is exactly why this row exists - and it is aimed at the audience least able to absorb the surprise.
